Flood Emergency Response Action in Nairobi (FERN) launched to help communities affected by recent flood crisis

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 5... Mukuru Slums Development Projects (MSDP), Concern Worldwide Kenya in Partnership with USAID have launched Flood Emergency Response Action (FERN) in Mukuru, Nairobi aiming to help those affected by floods following the recent flood crisis in the country.

The project aims to help the community with Non-Food Items (NFI) including Water containers, basins, sanitary items and Sanitary towels in line with hygiene promotion messages done by community health promoters to address the immediate needs arising.

Similarly 7,800 households that were affected in those areas will benefit from Ksh 4,500 cash transfer initiative for four months to benefeciaries already identified to help them secure services and items that they require, the program will see close to 20,000 individuals benefit.

Wairimu Wahome, Country director Concern Worldwide Kenya stated that the incident was unforeseen and the level of negative impact the floods had on Mukuru was severe.

"USAID through Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance are able to Continue providing support to the Mukuru community together with the cash transfer will be of great help to them, we have a conversation on how we can sustain this in future",said Wairimu Wahome. 

Among other places being targeted include Makadara, Embakasi South, Embakasi North, Ruaraka, Mathare and Korogocho in impementing the project.

Anne Muthoni, Head of programs Mukuru Slums Development projects (MSDP) stated that the process involve the community and door to door registration of those who were affected while acknowledging that some of them had moved out, others had their homes demolished but were traced using Nyumba Kumi mapping.

"We have tried our best to ensure that those benefiting from the project are the most vulnerable in the community" said Muthoni.

Concern Worldwide Kenya, Country director Wairimu Wahome applauded the government for the support while further calling on for proper planning and long term budget allocation to focus on promoting resilience of communities to withstand such incidents when they come.
