UASU and KUSU call off nationwide strike, Signs return to Work Formula

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 27..The Nationwide strike, involving university lecturers, non-teaching staff and various workers’ unions, was resolved after a day-long meeting at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection headquarters led by CS Dr. Alfred Mutua, Labour PS Shadrack Mwadime, Higher Education and Research PS Dr. Beatrice Inyangala among other senior government officials.
The agreement was brokered between the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals, and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).
"As part of the return-to-work formula signed with UASU, the strike has been called off immediately, with no risk of victimization for union members. Universities will now implement an enhanced monthly basic salary, with increments ranging from 7 to 10 percent". Said CS Labour Dr. Alfred Mutua.
In addition the CS said an automatic annual increment of 4 percent of the basic salary will be implemented for the duration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) cycle, running from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025.
"We also agreed to harmonize the retirement age for academic staff, including graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, and assistant lecturers, at 70 years". Added Dr. Mutua
Similarly, KUSU members same salary increment of 7 percent to 10 percent has been agreed upon with the retirement age for non-academic staff, including those in teaching labs and university libraries, standardized at 65 years.
Furthermore, in the agreement with KUDHEIHA, workers represented in universities will receive a 10 percent pay increase, marking a significant victory for their members.
"Following the signing of the deal, I assured all parties that my ministry will ensure mechanisms are in place to resolve disputes before they escalate into industrial action". Stated the CS.
CS Mutua announced that inter-ministerial committee will convene for a month meeting effective October 1 2024 to address unresolved issues, including harmonization of allowances, medical cover, internal CBAs, enhanced staffing, and budgets for promotions, car loans, and mortgage schemes for public universities.
