UASU and KUSU threaten to strike again as government fails to honour agreement

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 15...The Universities Academic Staff Union ( UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) in a joint press Conference at their offices said that the Return to Work Formula (RTWF) that was signed in September 26 2024 following a nationwide strike has not been operationised nor the CBA Implemented.

On the RTWF stated that the employer shall immediately pay the montly basic salary as mutually agreed with the government vide the inter-Ministerial committee at 7 and 10 percent respectively to be implemented in October 2024 salaries.

"We strongly believe that failure to operationalize RTWF and implement the CBA is due to inertia by University councils and Palpaple Lethergy of the government, the failure is not only causing unnecessary tension and anxiety amongst employees of public universities but also threatening to disrupt industrial peace", said  Constantine Wasonga, UASU National Secretary General.

The two unions further adds that government must not take advantage of the current political crisis to backtrack on the on the recently concluded Return to work formula adding that it should immediately facilitate conclusion and  implementation of the 2021-2025 National CBA for employees of public university and constituent colleges.

"We demand that the government fast track total operationalization of the RTWF signed on September 26 and immediately facilitate employers  (University Council) to implement the new salaries scale of 7 and 10 percent respectively as agreed" they added.

They further called on the inter-ministerial committee to be convened within the shortest time possible as agreed to finalize the remaining items of the CBA.

"Failure to which the union will be forced to use all the available means that theu deem fit to have RTWF fully operationalized and the 2021-2025 National CBA implemented".
