Government reaffirms its commitment to lead Africa in elevating voices and leadership of persons with disabilities
NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 8...The Africa Conference on Deafness 2024 is set to take place from 27-29 November in Nairobi , Policy makers, advocates and community leaders will convene to advance dialogue and actions on the rights, empowerment, inclusion of deaf persons and those living with disabilities across the continent.
Themed" Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future" government commits to lead Africa in elevating the voices and leadership of persons with disabilities fostering a future of inclusion and sustainability.
"Government is promoting economic empowerment for persons with disabilities through targeted programs, During Financial Year 2023-2024 574 self-help groups were connected to funding resources such as Uwezo Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, Youth Enterprise Fund and National Youth Opportunities towards advancement (NYOTA)", said Government Spokesman Dr. Isaac Mwaura.
Furthermore, government notes that for accessible quality education for persons with disability six learning institutions have been upgraded to enhance enrollment capacity and quality of their educational offerings.
"Scholarships of 2,232 learners with disabilities have been provided with extended monthly cash stipends to 47,000 households caring for persons with severe disabilities and additional 18,291 beneficiaries were enrolled totalling to 65,291 under the cash transfer program", stated Dr. Mwaura.
Through the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) government has launched a training program aimed at equipping sign language skills, With assistive devices distributed to 4, 222 persons including wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids prosthetic limbs and screen readers.
The Albinism Support Programme has provided 3,840 beneficiaries with sun screen lotion, cancer screening for 1,727 and eye care services for 500 students addressing the unique needs of persons with albinism.
"Africa conference on deafness 2024 is a unique opportunity to collaborate, share insights and forge a collective path foward in meeting the needs of The Deaf community and persons with disabilities".
