5th Edition of Chinese Spelling Bee competition attracts more participants

NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 16...The event themed "Bigger and Better" was organized by the Spelling Bee Secretariats Ms. Wanjiku Mbugua of USIU and Ms. Faith Mworia of Discovery Chinese Cultural Training Center and supported by the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Kenya ,The Kenya China Alumni Network and various Confucius Institutes.

USIU- Africa University hosted the event which attracted Schools such as Woodcreek school, Statehouse girls, Juter academy, Discovery Chinese Cultural Training Center, Kitengela International school, Royal Brains school Ruaka and Bypass, The Confucius classroom USIU-Africa, Confucius Institute University of Nairobi and Confucius Institute Kenyatta University.

Kenya China Alumni Association chair, Henry Rotich in his speech said that Kenyans who can communicate effectively in Chinese language serve as bridges between Kenya and China fostering mutual understanding and cooperation on both personal and professional level 

"Learning Chinese is not only merely about mastering a set of characters or words , its about immersing oneself in a rich tapestry of culture, history and tradition" reads a statement by Rotich

In addition the event received sponsorship from Kenya China Alumni who sponsored some gifts, The Discovery Chinese Cultural Training Center, The Confucius Institute of the University of Nairobi, USIU-Africa and others who offered other support.

Wanjiku Mbugua lecturer at USIU serving also as one of the committee leaders at Chinese Language Teachers Association of Kenya (CLTAK) lauded the event for its success adding that students continue to improve , able to read chinese language and Chinese characters

"In 2020 we began lower, having that students had no familiarity with the language but at the moment students are improving in reading and identifying the characters, plans underway to take Chinese language learning to grassroots " said Mbugua

"We look foward to rejuvenate Kenya-China ties and also for our students to secure scholarships in China" added Wanjiku Mbugua
