PS Dr. Kipsang says specialized resources to be made more accessible and affordable to people with disabilities

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 6...The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) 2024 expo kicked off at its headquarters in Kasarani, Nairobi with a theme "An African Expo on Specialised learning resources, Assistive devices and technology aiming at networks and partnerships establishment.

Institutions of higher learning, government researchers, Educationists, Medical institutions, NGO's, parents, persons living with disabilities and caregivers among others convoke for the two-day expo.

KISE Director Dr. Norman Kiogora lauded the government and its stakeholders for the support they have always accorded the institution.

"This expo marks a great step to ensuring accessibilty and affordability of assistive devices lavereging on technology" said  Chairman KISE council, Habat Sheikh Abdi.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang who graced the event urged on inclusive education reiterating that every child should be given an equal opportunity.

"Government ensures that the cost of assistive devices is low by having centralized procurement and data enrollment to help in distribution of the devices". said Martin Wekesa, Senior Chief Finance Officer, Ministry of Education. 

During President William Ruto's tour early 2024 at the Institution said that going into the future assisting devices used by children need to go down by having country's factory and assembly line with government's plan in building and bringing up necessary equipments to help in producing and assembiling devices required.  

"We are supporting the institution to put up a modern facility called parental centre as parents face challenges when they bring their children are forced to look for accommodation with sometimes being difficult, accommodating parents as they take their children through theraphy and institution's support" said Dr. Kipsang.

Furthermore, PS added that government working with other partners will put up 10 centers which will be branches of KISE across the country in 10 regions where they will be supporting in earlier identification and assessment of children and also conducting basic rehabilitation making easier to support the children.

"Some of these children require little support and they may end up being normal going foward we shall do the 10 centres across the country in identification and rehabilitation as we want to give our children equal opportunity as they grow into adulthood".stated Dr. Belio Kipsang.
