PS Omollo urges all agencies to engage with government bodies to prevent violent extremism and conflicts across communities

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 13...The Principal Secretary Ministry of Interior and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo has said Kenya has long being a strong advocate for peace and has consistently prioritized development over conflict maintaing peace and stability more effectively than many in East and horn of Africa region.
Dr. Omollo made the remarks during launch of Regional Programme on Peace Building and Preventing Violent Extrimism in East Africa saying that despite steps taken by the country there are still share of challenges and launch plays pivotal role in partnership towards lasting peace and development.
"In certain regions in our country we have witnessed occasional extremist activities with incidents such as Weatgate, Dusit, Garissa University and Mpeketoni, these occurrences have not only led to devastating losses but have also left us in perpetual state of heightened security and anxiety", said Dr. Omollo.
The PS further added that competition for natural resources and border disputes especially in arid and semi arid areas have been a sorce of extremist with pre-existing grievances often exploited by extremist groups to further their agendas.
"This launch presents us with valuable opportunity for us to take stock of our achievements, assess challenges that lie ahead and chart a course of action that aligns with the new peacebuilding architecture which will enable us address root causes of violent extremism", stated Omollo.
Independent panel of advisors comprising of thirteen distinguished Kenyan peacebuilders were appointed by Ministry of Interior to spearhead national dialogue amd formulate New agenda for peace in Kenya.
"We are grateful for the support provided by our international partners in this regard and we recognise important role you play in helping us address the challenges of violent extremism".
In addition the PS encouraged all agencies to engage with government bodies including National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), National Steering Committee in Peacebuilding and conflict management under state department of Internal Security and National Administration to promote peace.
"Kenya remains committed to promoting peace and security and we will continue to work tirelessly towards achieving this goal both domestically, regionally and internationally", added Omollo.
