NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5...Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in a recent survey have revealed serious challenges in the Social Health Authority (SHA) and Social Health Insurance Fund rollout impacting patient access to essential services.

The survey conducted between October 24 and 25 2024 included responses from the public, private and mission hospitals in Nairobi, Kiambu, Meru and Bomet counties respectively highlighted systemic issues that have left many NCD patients struggle to access timely and affordable care.

"The survey findings reveal critical gaps in SHA's ability to serve kenyan patients effectively especially those facing chronic and complex conditions like cancer, diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases", Evans M. Majau, Chair Caucus of patient led organizations of NCDs.

Furthermore, findings from the survey revealed access delay and systemic inefficiencies with public hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Referral Hospital reported frequent delays that left patients waiting for hours to access critical services.

They add that limited SHA coverage in private hospitals have left NCDs patients ineligible with Cancer, Transplant recipients and other high groups are especially affected by the limitations in coverage leading to an increase in reliance of out of pocket payments.

Caucus of patient led organizations of NCDs urges the Ministry of Health and SHA management to resume SHIF coverage for overseas treatment, clarify and publisize SHA benefits structures, address system failures promptly.

In addition they urge Ministry of Health to settle outstanding  NHIF debts, launch public awareness campaigns to increase understanding of SHA and engange patients organizations and civil society in a diaolgue to ensure patient-centered solutions through SHA's implementation.

"The SHA rollout must prioritize transparency, acess to specialized care and patient inclusion to fulfill the promise of Universal health coverage in Kenya, We urge the Ministry of Health and SHA leaders to engange with patient voices and take swift, corrective action to address these issues", stated Evans Majau.
